Just-in-Time, On-Demand Learning at the Desktop
What is Learning on Demand?
Learning on Demand (LoD) is the process of using technology to enable and
encourage workers, managers, and executives to learn and acquire new skills
while resolving the enterprise's problems--the learning process takes place in
context and on demand. LoD systems deliver instructional material to individual
users' desktops or portable computing devices on an as-needed or flexibly
scheduled basis.
Why should my company be interested in LoD?
By enhancing employee performance, LoD systems can:
- Increase productivity
- Reduce time to market and product cycle time
- Improve the quality and responsiveness of customer service functions
- Increase manufacturing yields
- Optimize marketing and sales efforts.
Strategically, LoD systems can:
- Help your company attract and retain employees who are lifelong
learners, are highly motivated, and show initiative and creativity
- Allow your company to incorporate learning activities as an integral
part of your employees' job responsibilities and daily routine
- Provide your employees with timely and convenient access to
university-level course material appropriate to your company's needs
- Establish the culture necessary to create a learning organization.
Operationally, LoD systems can:
- Enable task-driven learning in which employees consult instructional
material in order to solve a specific problem or challenge that they currently
face
- Allow the user of instructional material to proceed at an optimal pace
and integrate the learning process into his or her personal schedule
- Allow the tailoring of instructional methodologies to accommodate the
distinct learning modes of various individuals
- Avoid the significant costs of traditional classroom instruction
methods by
- -- Eliminating off-site travel and classroom expenses
- -- Reducing employee time away from the job
- -- Distributing instructor costs across a larger audience
- -- Avoiding a pace of instruction that adjusts to meet the needs of the slowest learner in the group
- Measure the user's understanding of any given material, allowing users
to proceed to new material only after mastery of the current material is
complete.
